Needs Statement

Health care professionals have witnessed an alarming increase in asthma within the United States over the past twenty years, prompting the United States Department of Health and Human Services to describe it as an “epidemic”. The burden of asthma in adults and children is directly responsible for significant school absenteeism, loss of work time, increased health care costs, with approximately 40,000 hospitalizations and 600 deaths annually just in the State of California.

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) has been identified as the United States’ fastest growing health problem. COPD is now the fourth most common cause of death and the only one in the top ten that continues to rise. Tobacco use remains the leading preventable cause of death in the United States, causing more than 440,000 deaths each year and resulting in direct medical cost of more than $75 billion. Despite considerable progress in reducing smoking rates, tobacco dependence remains an important problem in the United States. Smoking rates are now estimated to be at 20% for both sexes, with rates of lung cancer and COPD increasing markedly in women.

Obstructive sleep apnea has become an increasingly more recognized condition affecting more than twelve million Americans, according to the National Institutes of Health. Untreated, sleep apnea can cause hypertension, cardiovascular disease, weight gain, and memory problems.
