As part of a greater organization and network, our resources and impact are state- and nationwide through the American Lung Association of California and the national American Lung Association.

For example, as a result of a national American Lung Association lawsuit filed in 1993, the Environmental Protection Agency established revised, stricter air quality standards for smog and soot in July 1997.

Children with asthma are among the millions of Americans who will benefit from the lower levels of air pollution these new standards are expected to bring.

On the state level, the American Lung Association of California has been a driving force behind the annual Clean Air Month every May, working hard in the state to raise public awareness about the need for everyone to work to reduce air pollution and the availability of cleaner transportation options.

Since 1904, the American Lung Association has been fighting for the lung health of all Americans, in part by supporting basic and clinical research through training and “seed” grants for researchers who are at the early stage of their careers. Click here for detailed history.

UPDATE (May 12, 2006): Albuterol Inhaler Shortage

Inhalers that use CFCs have been banned and are being phased out. The official ban of CFCs does not go into effect until December 31 2008. The elimination of CFC-producing inhalers is a public health benefit and a decision by the FDA that the Lung Association supports.

Over the next two years we may see periods of shortages for this type of inhaler as manufacturers have already begun to convert their manufacturing to CFC-free inhalers.

It has been reported that this transition from CFC to non-CFC producing inhalers is causing severe shortages in some locations and an increase in prices. This shortage ONLY affects Albuterol inhalers, the quick relief medicine, not any of the other asthma or COPD medicines. The Albuterol solution used with a nebulizer is NOT affected.

The following are some things you can do if you are affected by the shortage:

  • Use less albuterol. You should be using your Albuterol inhaler only when you are having symptoms or before exercise. If you are using your albuterol inhaler more than 2 times a week or if asthma symptoms wake you up more than 2 times per month, your asthma may be poorly controlled. Consult with your doctor so that your asthma can be better managed and controlled.
  • Switch to a CFS-free inhaler. CFC-free inhalers with albuterol are now available, but you will need a specific prescription from your doctor to obtain one. A pharmacist cannot substitute this product for you. Depending on your insurance, these new inhalers may be more expensive, but our hope is that as more people move to the CFC-free delivery method that the price will come down.
  • Continue to use your Controller medication (Advair, Flovent, or QVAR), as directed. Controller medications help reduce your asthma or COPD symptoms and the need to use your Albuterol inhaler for quick relief of shortness of breath.
  • Obtain financial assistance for puchasing medications. The American Lung Association is a member of the Partnership for Prescription Assistance (PPA), which is available to help assist people who cannot afford their prescription medication. Contact the PPA at www.pparx.org or 1-888 4PPA-NOW (1-888-477-2669).

If you have any additional questions or concerns please call your local lung association or the Lung Help Line at
    1-800–LUNG-USA.

Please check the Food and Drug Administration’s site for the very latest information on albuterol inhaler supply.
